CALL FOR RESEARCH PROPOSALS 2026
In line with its objective to promote research in the field of social sciences in Mauritius, the Human Welfare League (HWL) in collaboration with the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), is inviting research proposals from Mauritian Academics, Researchers, Students and Professionals for the following:
A : research grant of 40,000.00 will be awarded per new research project of your choice
Research Areas
The research can be on any topic within the field of social science, with the following conditions to be fulfilled:
- The topic must address any specific current social problem in the context of Mauritius
- The topic must be discussed from both secular and Islamic perspectives
- The research methodology must involve field data collection in Mauritius
Research Requirements
- The New research project should be original and represent a real contribution to its respective field of study.
- The research should NOT have been submitted to any other organisation before nor have been published before in a substantially similar form for the New Research Category
- The research should constitute a value addition to the Mauritian society.
- The research should provide details on the research methodology adopted to attain the final results. Note that the research methodology must involve field data collection in Mauritius.
- The data used must be submitted with the final version of the research, with an indication of the exact source(s) of the data.
- The research should result in a substantial paper or a small booklet of about 8,000-10,000 words.
- The researcher must submit a preliminary draft of the research four (4) months after start of the project, along with an interim report to indicate progress of the research.
- Upon submission of the final draft of the research, the paper will be sent for blind reviews and the researcher is expected to address all review comments prior to acceptance of final research.
- Research can be submitted in following languages; English, French, Urdu and Arabic. A synopsis in English has be submitted for Urdu and Arabic research.
- For those submitting a dissertation, they have to submit an academic paper based on their dissertation
Eligibility
- Applicants should have an academic background in the field of social sciences.
- Applicants should have the necessary research and analytical capabilities.
- Applicants should be of high moral standard with reference two referees.
- Applicants must possess an expertise in the field of their research proposal
Research Grant Payment Mode
1.Funding will be limited to 25% per New research project. Disbursement will be as follows:
- 25% to be paid upon signing of an agreement.
- 75% to be paid after acceptance of the final version of the research.
Evaluation Criteria
A decision on funding will be made by an academic committee, based on quality, originality, and relevance of the proposal to the Mauritian context.
Publication of Research
HWL will hold the right to publish the completed research, with due recognition to the contributing author.
How to Apply
The research proposal shall be between 1000-1500 words, including the following details:
- Title of proposed topic
- A brief summary of the research
- Research background
- Objectives of the research
- Literature reviews
- Research design/methodology/approach
- Expected outputs and results
- Practical and social implications
- Originality/value addition
- A detailed research timeline (maximum 1 year project), describing the implementation stages with milestones.
- Detailed CV of candidate, including contact details (mailing address, email address, telephone numbers).
- References from 2 Referees

Notice
The Academic Board is not compelled to distribute any grant if it does not receive any suitable research proposal that meets its requirements
